Shamu and the boys

This weekend was the kid's fishing derby at the nearby lake. We were so excited about going. Even lil J couldn't wait to catch a big fish. He loves fishing! So when 5 am rolled around, Saturday morning, the house was buzzing. He loaded the fishing gear into the truck while I packed up the snacks and gathered the boys. We were pulling into the short line at the gate at 6:20 or so when we realized that the line wasn't very long. This is usually a really busy, crowd drawing, well publicized event. He got out of the truck and walked over to talk to a couple of guys that were going on about something. When he returned, we were all disappointed. The fishing derby would be postponed til next month.

On the drive back to the house, we talked about things we could do instead, to make it up to the kids. (My oldest was in the truck behind ours with his grandpa who was going to join in the fishing fun. ) It was decided being our anniversary, and since he actually didn't have to be at the job site, that we go to Sea World and spend the weekend. I had won 4 tickets earlier in the year at a big fishing show, so it was perfect. We grabbed a change of clothes and managed to load them without the older one seeing, told grandpa where we were going and said goodbye, ate a quick breakfast then off we went.

They both fell asleep in the truck and woke up as we crossed into San Dieigo county. Kiddo asked if we were going camping. We had a laugh then asked if he saw any camping gear loaded. We stopped at the visitor's center to look around, stretch and book us a nice hotel room and that's when he went wild. He loves coming to San Diego. He remembered his last trip to Sea World, 7 years ago. We didn't tell him it was that long til he was done telling us his favorite parts. He was 2 1/2 then and remembered it all.

J is 3 now. I wasn't sure if he would enjoy it with the same enthusiasm his brother had. He loved it. We walked through the gates with 20 min til Shamu. He didn't quite know what to make of it while we waited, but was bouncing around and jumping as soon as the first whale passed.

Then kiddo remembered he had fed the bat rays and wanted to do it again and teach his little brother. Off we went to the forbidden reef to find the majestic creatures. With fish in hand, they dropped their hands into the freezing water and waited for the rays to suck them from their hands. J was a bit scared but realized it wasn't so bad. He took to petting them rather than feeding them. They fed and pet dolphins too.

As the day progressed, we found nemo and dory often, each time met with the same squeals of delight.

J liked the moon jellies as well. We must have watched them for quite a while. I was excited to see the tiny sea horses and was a bit disappointed to not see the sea dragons.

All in all it was a wonderful day. The kids loved it. Hubby chided us all day for buying a poncho at the shamu show. It sure came in handy at the sea lion/otter show. He was completely wet.

Kiddo couldn't stop saying what a great day he had, until he got to the hotel and saw that they had game cube there for him to play. That was the icing on the cake. Hubby fell asleep immediately and I had the sublime pleasure to snuggle with two little boys and watch the movie Elf.

and because I like blinkies I'm going to throw a few in here as well
